The term parlor was derived from a French verb ‘Parle®’ which means ‘to speak’. The term was given to a room in which to have conversations, a place mainly for sitting and talking to various people. Mid-nineteenth-century homes included a formal parlor, sometimes described by social historians as a “sacred” space, where weddings, social gathering, networking and other public events were held. In the English-speaking world of the 18th and 19th century, having a parlour room was evidence of social status.
